If you want to make a website and are seeking out the best website builders for those in the UK, you’re in the right place!
By opting to use a website builder, you will literally be saving £1,000’s that you otherwise would have to pay a developer or web designer.
Even better is that websites made on website builders such as Wix/SquareSpace use professionally designed templates (examples below), so no-one will even know the difference 😉. Let’s get started!
How I Ranked The Best Website Builders UK
When it came to compiling this guide, I created a checklist that each website builder must go through to be added on my list.
By doing so, I was able to weed out the less desirable picks and leave only the ones that excel in multiple areas.
So here are the different categories in which I ranked each website builder!
If I was to take a guess, this would be the first-ever website that you’ll be making? If so, having an easy to use platform and interface is critical for your success to get online with a beautiful website as soon as possible.
Such things that I considered were the intuitiveness of the platform, are their training resources/ videos, drag and drop functionality, built-in stock photography library and heaps more.
Another thing I considered definitely had to be the implementation of drag and drop functionality. One of, if not the biggest drawcards of using a website builder is the ability to create a website with drag and drop.
By having this feature baked into the platform, users are able to design a website from start to finish without one line of code. This means you won’t have to fuss about HTML, CSS, PHP or any other programming languages.
So if you’re not happy with a layout, photos, videos, maps, column layout, don’t worry, it’s only a drag away to make it the way you want!
While many don’t think about customer support when it comes to website builders, it is nonetheless a very important factor.
In most cases, users of website builder won’t have to contact support as they are incredibly easy to use. However, according to Murphy’s Law, if it can go wrong, it will go wrong.
Because of this, I have only included providers that give customers 24/7 customer support, and preferably within the UK. Or at least a number to call via Skype toll-free. I have also kept an eye out for email, chat and ticketing support.
The next thing that I ranked definitely had to be price. I am guessing that most people reading this guide are those that are using a website builder for their small business, or even a new business project.
If this is the case, keeping expenses to a minimum is extremely important. Also with website builders, it is an occurring pricing structure, so while it might seem cheap month to month, over the long term these figures can start to add up.
That is why I have only picked website builders that provide competitive and cheap pricing on a month to month basis. Also preferably, they should charge in GBP.
Another thing I considered was the load time of the servers from the website builders. This is an extremely important consideration as when using a closed ecosystem like Wix or SquareSpace, you are at the whim of using their servers and hardware.
So if you weren’t happy with the speeds, there’s unfortunately not much one can do. Other than migrating to another provider. But even this is difficult.
Since speed is so important (even Google has said so too), I have only picked website builders that deliver fast speeds to websites and businesses located in the United Kingdom.
As a good rule of thumb, the website should load under 1 second. Anything above than and a website can see a notable decline in conversions, leads, visitors and revenue.
I also considered uptime, which is the amount of time in which a website is running online successfully. Ideally we would want an uptime of 100%, however, a more realistic target is around 99.98%. This almost perfect score is due to hardware maintenance and software updates.
The next thing I considered was online store/ eCommerce functionality and scalability. As we are transitioning to buying most of our goods online, new markets and stores are popping up on a daily basis.
This is a great opportunity to start a new store and sell your products to a local or international audience. Since this is an important factor, I have only chosen website builders that have the option for setting up an eCommerce store.
On top of that, I have picked providers that allow different product skews, plugin integration, POS (point of sale), PayPal and credit card payments, sales dashboards, coupon codes and more!
You can’t have a website in this day and age without having analytics and SEO integrated into the service. Because of this, I have only included website builders that have baked in analytics dashboards that can monitor visitors, page views, bounce rates, conversions, goals and more.
There is also the option for connecting to online tools such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console for monitoring.
Another thing that goes hand in hand with analytics is SEO, also known as Search Engine Optimisation. For a long time, website builder were lacking in the SEO implantation with such things as permalink structure, alt tags, meta descriptions, schema markup, SEO tiles and more.
However, in the past couple of years, website builders have really started to up their game and are now close to WordPress levels of SEO implementation.
While this wasn’t a major consideration in my review process, it still did have some impact as many new websites are integrated with social networks.
What do I mean by integrated? Well, safe for example you own a cafe. Ideally, you would want to show an image carousel of your Instagram feed in which website visitors can navigate and get a feel for your food/ business.
On the other hand, social media integration could mean that anytime you publish a blog post, they will automatically be shared on Facebook, Reddit, Twitter or any other platform. This simply means less work for the website owner.
The last thing I considered in my review process had to be the range of templates/ themes available. I found this to be very important as a website builder could have the easiest user interface, but if they can’t back it up with great looking, functional and beautiful templates. Then it’s simply not worth it.
So as this is a big must-have, I have only included drag and drop builders that have a large library of templates to choose from for all types of websites from online stores, one-page websites, and blogs.

Wix Plan & Pricing Breakdown
Ok, so Wix seems like an awesome platform that can do it all. But what about the price!? Money doesn’t grow on tree you know! Well said…
When it comes to the pricing of Wix, it’s surprisingly quite reasonable (From £8/mo) considering the amount of functionally. Here are their most popular plans with included features.
- Combo Plan: This is Wix’s beginner plan which includes 2GB bandwidth, 3GB storage, free domain (includes .co.uk) and 30 minutes of hosted video. The price is £8/mo.
- Unlimited Plan: Next is a considerable step up with unlimited bandwidth, 10GB storage, free domain, 1-hour video, and a £75 ad voucher. Pricing is £11.25/mo.

Wix’s Speed, Uptime & SEO
As for the speeds and uptime numbers for Wix websites, they tested incredibly well. Even for UK and European based websites (more on that below).
On average, speeds were around the 500ms range when tested from London which is the best speeds that I got. This is due to Wix having servers in both Europe and the US.
When it came to uptime, Wix also scored pretty well in this department with an average uptime of 99.98%.
Another thing I looked into was SEO, which Wix has been known to fall behind within the past few years. But as of writing this, they have seriously picked up their game.
Users now have the ability to optimise permalinks, meta descriptions, automatic XML sitemaps, Google maps integration, and even rich snippets.
Wix Overview
Overall, Wix is hands down one of the best website builder that is great for small businesses, blogs, online stores and more. Pair that up with their cheap prices, there’s no surprise millions use this platform!

- Free domain & SSL
- Awesome 24/7 customer support
- Square POS integration
- Hundreds of templates
Cons
- Not as many templates as Wix
Weebly Features + Benefits
Next up on my guide is Weebly which is one of the simplest and cheapest website builder platforms out there.
While Weebly was known for their lacklustre themes, since being acquired by Square in 2018, they have now refreshed their themes and added more eCommerce/ small business functionality. Nice!
Some other standout advantages are their responsive minimalist templates, easy drag and drop builder, video headers, parallax effects, eCommerce integration, app centre and more.
To see what people can make with Weebly, checkout this list. You can also see this UK small business Weebly website. Also see below for a Weebly website setup.
Weebly Plans + Pricing
When it comes to pricing, Weebly is by far one of the cheapest website builders out there. Not to mention they have a free plan as well (not a custom domain though). Here is a brief breakdown of their plans.
- Connect Plan: This plan includes 500Mb storage, free domain/ SSL, SEO features, access to themes and more. Unfortunately, this option includes ads. Pricing is £3.35/mo.
- Pro Plan: Next is Weebly’s most popular plan which includes unlimited storage, free domain, eCommerce, no ads, £100 ad credits plus more! Pricing is an affordable £7.80/mo.
- Business Plan: Lastly is an uber offering which has unlimited bandwidth, online payments, no ads, free domain, coupon codes plus dozens more! Price is £15.62/mo.
Weebly Speed, Uptime & SEO
Ok, so Weebly is cheap and has great functionality, but how do they stack up in the more technical departments?
Well, to my surprise, they did pretty well. When it came to doing speed tests from a pinged location in London, I was getting speeds around the 750ms mark.
As for uptime, their numbers were extremely respectable with an average uptime of 99.97% over a 6 month period.
So far so good! But, what about SEO? Weebly does have SEO basics covered such as page titles, permalinks, meta descriptions, and page descriptions. But for more technical SEO, it is a bit limiting though.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Weebly is one of the top website builders in the United Kingdom that covers all the bases while still delivering a great price. I could see this being a great option for small business websites and one-page websites. Can’t be missed!

3. Shopify: Best Website Builder For Online Stores
Overview: Shopify originally started as an online snowboarding store in 2004. However, founder Tobias Lütke couldn’t find a good eCommerce portal. Fast forward to the present day and Shopify now has 800,000+ customers and has processed $100 billion in sales!
Pros
- Great eCommerce solution for beginners
- Affordable monthly pricing
- 14-day free trial
- Integration with social media stores
- Track & Manage orders
- No coding needed
Cons
- Plans can get quite expensive
Shopify Features
When it comes to creating an online store, there is one company that instantly comes to mind. Shopify.
But what has made Shopify so popular?
Simply put, Shopify allows anyone, even nontechies to get an online store up and running in no time. This is all made possible thanks to their user-friendly interface and 70+ customisable templates to choose from.
On top of this, Shopify also includes POS options, integration with plugins (such as Oberlo for drop shipping), high converting shopping carts, easy listing options and TONS more.
For a taste of what you can expect with Shopify, check out this list of beautiful Shopify websites. You can also check out this real-world functioning UK based eCommerce store.
Shopify Plans + Pricing
As for Shopify’s plans and pricing options, they have three different categories with various pricing options within each one.
These categories include Shopify Lite (for integration with Facebook, Messenger & Blogs), Shopify Basic (for Shopify hosted websites) and Shopify Plus (for enterprise solutions).
For the sake of simplicity, I will cover the base plan for Shopify Basic which is the most popular and functional for new online stores.
- Shopify Basic: This offering enables users to sell an unlimited amount of products, online store, 24/7 support, free SSL, discount codes, POS, credit card fee of 2.2% and heaps more! Pricing is £23.35/mo.
Shopify Speed, Uptime & SEO
According to FastCompany, a 1-second delay in speed costs Amazon about $1.6 billion dollars in lost sales. While this is a dramatic scenario, slow load times can kill conversions and sales.
So what about Shopify? According to our testing, average load times are around the 800ms mark which is quite respectable. While Shopify’s servers are located in the US, they do have a CDN integrated for faster load times throughout the world.
As for uptime, it’s as good as it gets. From our testing and research, customers have been receiving 99.99% average uptime which as close to perfect as one can get.
Along with having great speeds and uptime, Shopify also delivers great SEO features such as image alt tag, star reviews (schema), XML sitemaps, Google maps, meta description and heaps more.
Overview
While Shopify is on the pricey end, their beginner-friendly interface and unlimited listing option is a huge win for those starting an online store. Because of this, it earns the title of the best website builder for e-Commerce and dropshipping stores!

4. WordPress + BlueHost: Best Website Builder For Full Control
Next up on my best website builders UK guide has definitely got to be WordPress. While WordPress is a website builder, it often gets dismissed (even though is runs 34% of all websites online).
This is often due to the fact that WordPress doesn’t have a built-in drag and drop website builder which often gets attached to “website builders”.
However, in recent years, this has changed dramatically as WordPress has many new drag and drop plugins such as Divi, Emelementor, Beaver, Themify and Visual Composer to name a few.
As for the price of WordPress… It’s completely FREE! Yup, nada, zilch, zero! All you’ll have to bring is your own web host.
For WordPress, I use BlueHost hosting which is also the number one recommendation by WordPress themselves. They have 99.99% average uptimes and speeds of around 550ms.
Combining WordPress + BlueHost allows users access to 10,000’s of themes, plugins, developers, add-ons plus TONS more.
To get started with using WordPress, you can see how to make a WordPress website guide here. Not to mention by BlueHost review and BlueHost coupon code.
For examples of WordPress websites, check out my list here where you can see some top websites built on WordPress. For a real-world WordPress website, hostreviews.co.uk (shameless plug 😉) is a great example!
As for the price and time frame of getting online, users can get a hosting package from as little as £2.33/mo. Also with 1-click WordPress installs, users can get a website online within minutes!

5. Site123: Best Beginner Friendly Website Builder
Next on my list is Site123, which I have found to be the easiest website builder to use.
While all the page builders in this guide are all user-friendly, Site123 takes this to a whole new level. Once signed up, you really can see just how simple the interface is with the large tiled layout.
This means making edits, creating new pages, blog posts only takes seconds to create. From there, you can easily edit, upload photos/ videos and so much more.
Also with their prebuilt templates for almost every small business/ website layout, it really is a click and forget solution.
One downside to this is that there, unfortunately, isn’t much creative freedom over editing and styling the templets. This is, however, a side effect of having an uber-friendly interface.
For some Site123 examples, you should check out this list here for some reference and inspiration.
As for the pricing, Site123 comes in two different formats. The first being their free option which gives users 500Mb storage, 1GB bandwidth, and a subdomain.
Alternatively, users can sign up for their premium plan which is £10.35/mo and includes a free domain, 10GB storage, 5GB bandwidth, eCommerce options, removes ads, email accounts, SEO, free photo stock library and heaps more.
Overall Site123 is one of my best website builder UK picks due to its uber-friendly interface and simple drag and drop features.

6. SquareSpace: Most Beautiful Website Builder + Templates
I’m going to come out right away and say it. In my opinion, I think that SquareSpace has the most beautiful website builder templates out there. Period.
While SquareSpace only has around 100 templates (which is still a lot), each one is carefully designed, curated and maintained by some of the best designers in the industry.
Having this focus on well designed and responsive websites has allowed SquareSpace to grow their 1 million + customer base and counting.
On top of having stunningly designed themes, SquareSpace also boats many turn key options for photography, eCommerce, restaurant, small business, fashion and blog websites.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU4IC7RVbc4
For some evidence on just how great these templates are, check out this list of SquareSpace made websites. Even UK home talent Idris Elba uses SquareSpace for his website.
As for the price and features of SquareSpace, their plans range from £10 – £30/mo with variable features.
Their beginner plan, for example, is £10/mo and includes unlimited bandwidth, free domain, SEO features, free SSL, mobile site, metrics and a lot more.
So if you don’t mind about price and want to wow customers/clients with your website, this SquareSpace is easily one of the best website builders on the market!

7. Jimdo: Best Enterprise Solution Website Builder
Moving onto the next website builder on my list is Jimdo. While Jimdo is a lessor known provider, they are starting to gain momentum as they are giving providers like Wix, Shopify, and SquareSpace a run for their money.
Much like the above-mentioned providers, Jimdo also has the ability to create drag and drop websites for eCommerce, portfolios, blogs, weddings, non-profits, photography, restaurant, authors, musicians and the list goes on.
For example Jimdo websites, this is a great place to look. Plus this real world Jimdo functioning website.
As for the usability, their platform is very easy to navigate and requires no coding or experience needed. Users can simply create a stunning drag and drop website that is completely mobile response with SEO baked in.
Say goodby to HTML, CSS, PHP and all the other programming languages!
When it comes to the pricing of Jimdo, their Grow Plan (which is the most popular) is only £1/mo! Yup, you read that right, only £1/mo!
However… This is a massively discounted introductory rate by about 95%. After the 12 month period is up, the price will revert back to the original price tag of £12/mo.
So if you are after a great website builder to wet your toes with, Jimdo might be the one for you!

8. Constant Contact: Best AI Powered Website Builder
Up next is a relatively new player to the website builder game that has been taking the industry by storm.
While Constant Contact has been around since 1996, it have mainly focused on email marketing outreach. However, in past years, they have created a website builder platform that is integrated into their email outreach platform.
But one thing that has definitely got to set Constant Contact apart from the rest is their artificial intelligence website maker. This thing is seriously good/ spooky.
When signing up, users put in a website category which could be “photography” for example. From there, Constant Contact generates websites right in front of your eyes in which the user can actually edit in real time.
Oh yeah, this whole process is done before you even put in an email address to signup and is completely free.
Like any other good website builder, Constant Contact has the ability to create online stores, small business websites, blogs and more all with their drag and drop builder.
Overall a great pick!

9. SiteBuilder: Best Website Builder For Blogs
Moving onto my second last pick is SiteBuilder which is a great all-round website builder that covers all of the bases.
Much like the above-mentioned drag and drop builders, SiteBuilder also offers eCommerce integration, custom email address, free domains, 100’s of templates and the list goes on.
But what I have really come to appreciate about SiteBuilder is their focus on blog style websites which is often neglected with drag and drop builders.
As for the pricing, it’s quite cheap when compared to its competitors which starts at £3.50/mo which includes the above-mentioned features.
Create Your SiteBuilder Website!
10. BigCommerce: For Large eCommerce Stores
Lastly, on my best website builders UK list is nonother than BigCommerce. For those wondering what this company does, the answer can be found in their name.
BigCommerce provides solutions for businesses that want to get online in a way that is completely scalable. Some brands using BigCommerce are Ben & Jerry’s, SkullCandy and Camelbak to name a few.
Ok, but what about small businesses? Well, you’ll be happy to know that Big Commerce caters to businesses of all shapes and sizes.
Take their beginner plan for example. It costs only £16.95/mo and includes an unlimited amount of product listings, no transaction fees, Apple Pay/ Google Play, Point Of Sale, eBay/ Amazon integration and more.
So while BigCommerce is often reserved for the big boys, they actually have a great offering for small businesses in the UK that want to sell products online.

Website Builder Vs Web Designer
Ok, so you’re keen on using a website builder but you’re not completely sold on the idea.
Well, let me give you some figures that might make you feel better about your decision.
On average, a basic website made by a web developer can start from £2,000 and takes 2-4 weeks to complete. On the other hand, a website builder can cost as little as £3/mo and enable users to get a website online in 1 day.
As for the visual aspect of a web designer Vs DIY website builder website, there really isn’t much difference (sorry web designers).
Don’t take my word for it though, here are some examples of top brands made with website builders from UberEats, Tony Hawk, BBC, and even Pixar.
Above is a Google Trends graph of website builders (in blue) Vs web designers (in red) since 2004. Can you see the trend…
So if you want to literally save £1,000’s and get a website that is on par with the pros and is completely beginner-friendly. A website builder is a great option.
Who Are Website Builders Good For?
Another common question that soon to be website builder uses ask is “but can I make my type of website on them?”.

Below are some of the most common types of websites, plus some more unique examples of websites made with website builders.
- Blog
- Portfolios
- Small business websites
- Cafe/ restaurant websites
- Forums
- News websites
- Personal websites
- Online stores
- Dropshipping stores
- Digital product stores
- Video sharing websites
- Reference websites
- One page websites
- Wiki websites
- Social websites
- Educational websites
- Non-profit website

How To Speed Up Your Wix, Weebly SquareSpace Website
When it comes to making a fast website, there are unfortunately many ways in which a website creator can slow down their websites.
Also with website builders being a closed format ecosystem (where the provider includes the hosting), users are sometimes limited to the server speeds.
When this does happen, being able to take action into your own hands and make optimisations can make the difference between a good and horrible user experience.
So here are some great tips on how to speed up your website.
Optimise/ Compress Images
One thing I see TONS of on almost every website I see is the lack of image optimisation. Even in 2019, we are still visiting websites where it takes almost 30 seconds for an image to load (even with fast internet).
As for the why, it comes down to images not being correctly sized, formatted or compressed.
Take a restaurant website for example. They just got back their professional photography shots which are almost 5Mb in size (which are 6000 x 3200 pixels). They then go on to add 10 of these images to their homepage.
As you can guess, having these massive images not correctly sizes will make any website sluggish. Regardless of internet speed or web host.
To combat this, it is best to first resize the image, then compress it to a jpeg format. I find that 1000 x 600 images are great for quality while keeping the size to a minimum.
Also if you have PNG photos, it is also worth converting these to jpeg too. For this, I like to use online tools such as compressjpeg and png2jpeg which are totally free!
Use Google Fonts
Another sure-fire way to speed up your Wix, SquareSpace, Weebly website is to use Google fonts. While these website builders automatically have Google font installed, I do see some webmasters that opt for alternative fonts.
These can turn into an issue as this can cause caching issues, loading issues and more as it is not a regulated font from Google. So if you don’t opt to use 1 of the 810 Google fonts, this may slow your website down significantly.
Limit Image Sliders Graphics
While drag and drop builders are best known for their image-intensive websites, image sliders, image carousels, and videos, this can be a double-edged sword.
There is no doubt that these features do look amazing and are loved by website visitors. But finding the right balance will prevent a slow loading website.
Some tips on how to reduce load time is to have less images in a slider/ a smaller slider. Less images on the homepage and the removal of videos.
Have a Minimal Above The Fold Page
For the newspaper readers out there, you’ll know of this term. But for the younger readers, maybe not so much.
Above the fold, content is the first visible part of a newspaper/ website before scrolling down or unfolding. This is meant to be an attention-grabbing area where it hooks readers in to keep reading.
While this is a great marketing tool, if you make it too dense and graphic-heavy, it can severely slow down a website. So again, finding the right balance is key for a fast loading websites.
Limit External Plugins
Last but not least it to limit the amount of external plugins to your website or blog. Every time you are to add an extension or plugin, you are essentially adding extra HTML code to your website that has to be loaded.
While a few extensions here and there won’t hurt too much, if you start to add more and more, then you’ll start to see a decline to speed.
One good way to see if these plugins are effecting your website is to use an online speed test. Google Page Speed Insights and Gtmetrix are both great tools. This is also a good method to get a baseline speed and then you can improve upon that.
F.A.Q. About Website Builders
Upon writing this guide, I kept on seeing the same questions pop up when it came to picking the best website builder. So to shed some light on these queries, here are the most common ones that I came across.
What Is Drag & Drop?
Simply put, drag and drop is the method of creating and building a website without any code. This is all my possible by simply clicking modules, photos, and text into place to organise the website.
Implementing this method allows for new website owners to tailor make a website to their liking and style. Drag and drop is also one of the easiest ways to create a website. It also is a dynamic system as the HTML in the background is automatically coded. To learn more, this is a helpful guide.
Are Website Templates Any Good?
Well, yes and no. There are 100’s of great templates out there for websites of all types. Seriously, if you can think of it, there is likely a template for it. I have seen some for medial practises, plumbing businesses, authors, non-profit and the list goes on.
But are they any good? Well, it all depends on the service that you choose. If you are to pick a reputable service like Wix, WordPress or SqaureSpace, then you’ll have access to an endless amount of themes and templates. Odds are that you’ll find one right of you.
What Is The Best E-Commerce Website Builder?
Another common question I came across is what is the best functioning online store retailer is. Again, it all depends on a user’s needs, amount of skews of products that want to sell and also the transition fees that want to pay.
A great place to start would to use a platform such as Shopify or Wix. Alternatively, you could use WordPress with an ecommerce plugin such as WooCommerce. Either way, any of these should do a great job for your website.
Is Wix Better Than WordPress?
One of the age old questions of new website creators is should I use a drag and drop website builder like Wix, or rather a self-hosted platform such as WordPress.
For those who need a website online in a jiffy and at an affordable price, I would have to go with Wix. This means that you can focus more on what you’re good at within your own business.
However, if you plan on making a larger scale website, with hundreds or posts and pages, then WordPress is a great option. WordPress also allows users to have complete control over their website from hosting, themes, plugins, SEO and TONS more!
Are There Any Free Website Builders?
Yes! In a matter of fact, there are heaps of website builders that offer free options for those who want to test the waters. Some notable ones are Wix and Weebly which give a free plan to new users.
While it is free, there are some downsides as far as limited bandwidth, placement of ads on the website and also a subdomain such as mywebsite.wix.com. For a small business, this would scream unprofessional. But for a personal blog, this could be a great option.
Which Is The Easiest Website Builder?
From my experience, I have found Wix and Site123 to be the easiest website builders for beginners. After signing up, new users can literally have a website online within 5 minutes. From there, all users have to do is update the copy, business information, and a few photos. Viola! You now have a brand new website that is ready to share on Google!
